Music Lessons

I offer private music lessons for both adults and children age 8 and up who would like to learn guitar, piano, bass, or drums. Lessons are once a week for 30 or 60 minutes. You can also book single lessons based on what I have available each week but priority will be given to students signing up for a weekly time slot. I am located at 27 Mayfair Drive in Barrie, ON. My hours are Sunday through Thursday from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Please send me a text or email for more information and available time slots:  contact@james-stacey.com, or 705 710 9533.

I will plan your lessons according to your taste in music, goals, age, and previous experience with playing music. The primary focus of the lessons will be learning songs and the necessary skills to learn and play those songs. Some of those skills include rhythm & timing, technique, ear training, how to practice effectively, music theory, and reading sheet music (or guitar tablature if that is your preference). We can also have lessons on improvising and composing music if that is something that interests you.

Lessons can be structured in many different ways, depending on your preferences. We could focus on: 1) genres of popular music (pop, rock, country, metal, etc..); 2) classical music using the curriculum and repertoire from the Royal Conservatory of Music; and 3) jazz music, advanced theory and improvisation. I have listed below what I can offer for each instrument. In our first lesson I will ask what you would like to focus on and anything you would not like to learn.

By default, for adults with no strong preferences, and for most children I usually teach popular music alongside the classical curriculum, which includes level by level skills, technique, reading and theory. But it is your lesson and my goal is to help you learn music the way that is best for you. â€‹

  • Beginner lessons are designed for people with little to no experience. Beginner classical lessons (guitar, bass, piano) would be the Royal Conservatory of Music's Introductory Level to Level 4.

  • Intermediate lessons are designed for people with some experience who wish to improve their skills. Intermediate classical lessons (guitar, bass, piano) would be the Royal Conservatory of Music's Level 5 to 8.

  • Advanced lessons (guitar and bass only) will focus on jazz studies and performance at the university level. Advanced classical lessons (bass only) would be the Royal Conservatory of Music's Level 9 to 10. â€‹â€‹â€‹
